The Park is protected from the Atlantic Ocean by a chain of dunes almost parallel to the continental shore, formed by two peninsulas and five sandy barrier islands that serve as protection for a vast area of marshlands, channels and small islands.

This habitats shelter a rich variety of plant and animal species and its landscapes are some of the most beautiful in Portugal.
